As we wrap up Mental Health Month, let’s have an honest conversation about something that touches millions of lives every day — mental health. Here at MindTech Behavioral Health, we’re dedicated to providing a full range of mental health services, treatments, and counseling, including the innovative NeuroStar TMS Therapy for those struggling with depression or anxiety who haven't responded to medications.
Did you know that mental illness affects more than 50 million Americans each year? That’s over 20% of the adult population, with 1 in 6 kids between the ages of six to 17 also experiencing a mental health disorder. Yet, despite how common these issues are, a large number of people still go without the treatment they need. Let’s dive into why that happens and what we can do about it.
The State of Mental Health in America
Who’s Affected?
Mental health issues are widespread. Anxiety disorders are the most common, affecting nearly 1 in 5 adults. Major depressive episodes impact 8.3% of adults. Children aren’t spared either, with suicide being the second-leading cause of death among kids aged 10 to 14.
State Variations
Mental health issues don’t affect all states equally. Utah has the highest rate of mental illness, with nearly 30% of adults reporting or seeking help. On the flip side, Florida has the lowest rate at around 17.49%.
Access to Treatment
Despite the high prevalence, more than half of U.S. adults with a mental illness (55%) aren’t getting treatment. That’s over 28 million people. Cost is the biggest barrier, with 42% of people saying they can’t afford mental health care. Even those with insurance often find it doesn’t cover enough.
Why Aren’t More People Getting Help?
There are several reasons why so many Americans go without the mental health care they need:
Cost: 42% of people say they can’t afford it.
Insurance Gaps: 17% say their health insurance doesn’t cover enough.
Lack of Information: 27% don’t know where to get help.
Self-Reliance: 26% believe they can handle it on their own.
Time Constraints: 19% don’t have the time to seek treatment.
The Impact on Kids
Children are particularly vulnerable. Over 16% of youths aged 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. States like Oregon have alarmingly high rates of childhood depression, affecting over 21% of kids.
Suicide Rates
Suicide remains a critical issue, with 49,449 people dying by suicide in 2022. States like Montana have the highest suicide rates, while New Jersey has the lowest. This stark difference underscores the importance of accessible mental health care.
What Can We Do?
Here’s the good news: help is available. At MindTech Behavioral Health, we offer various treatments, including counseling and the groundbreaking NeuroStar TMS Therapy, which is designed for those who haven’t found success with traditional treatments. It’s a safe, non-invasive way to treat depression and anxiety.
Affordable Care
If cost is a concern, know that the Affordable Care Act requires most insurance plans to cover mental health services. Don’t let financial barriers keep you from getting the help you need.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
Mental health is just as important as physical health. By talking openly about it and seeking help, we can break down the stigma and ensure that everyone gets the care they need.
As we close out #MentalHealthMonth, remember that help is out there. Whether it’s through therapy, medication, or innovative treatments like NeuroStar TMS, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.
Warm regards,
The MindTech Behavioral Health Team
